Taking quizzes
A quiz sits inside a topic, alongside its lessons. Opening it shows you what you are in for before you start: how many questions, the time limit, how many attempts you have, and the pass mark.
Read that panel. The settings vary from quiz to quiz, and the one that catches people out is the time limit.
Question types

Numeric questions can accept a tolerance, so a rounded answer is often still right. If a unit is asked for, give it.
Questions can carry different point values. A five-question quiz is not necessarily five equal marks — the point value is shown on each question.
Time limits
If a quiz has a time limit, the clock starts when you start and is shown throughout.
When the time runs out, your answers are submitted as they stand. Nothing is discarded. But nothing is paused either, so treat the timer as real.
A time limit of zero means no limit.
Attempts
Most quizzes allow more than one attempt. The number left is shown before you start and after each try.
Your best attempt is the one that counts. A worse second attempt does not replace a better first one, which means a retake can only help you. All attempts are listed on the quiz page with their scores and dates, so you can see how you moved.
An attempt limit of zero means unlimited.
Scoring and passing
After you submit you see your score, whether you passed, and — where the instructor wrote them — an explanation for each question.
Passing is against the quiz's own pass mark, compared exactly. A quiz with a pass mark of 78 does not pass at 77.6 even though it will display as 78%.
The explanations are the most valuable part of the screen and the part people skip. On a quiz you passed, they tell you what you got right for the wrong reason.
XP from quizzes

Both are paid once. A second attempt on a quiz you have already submitted and passed earns no further XP, which is intentional — the points are for the learning, not for the repetition.
Scoring above 90% also counts towards the Quiz Perfectionist badges.
When something goes wrong
Your answers showed but the attempt was not saved. You will be told explicitly if this happens. Your score on screen is real; the record of it did not save. Try the quiz again if you have an attempt left, and tell your instructor if you do not.
The quiz is not in the curriculum. A quiz with no questions in it is not shown to learners at all. If your instructor says a quiz exists and you cannot see it, that is the likely cause and it is theirs to fix.
